*singing* The Other Day... I Met A Bear.
So, yesterday Tim and I spent most of the day in downtown Vancouver at the passport office, trying to get my passport renewed. We’ve already spent the beginning of this week running around trying to get all of my new British Columbia ID in order (had to return my ID card, because the birth date was wrong - they had it down as Aug. 16th, instead of July 16th). So that’ll be another three to four weeks of waiting for a new BC ID, passport, and BC health card.

When we got home, Tim and I wanted to just relax with some meditation music, a massage and a bath. Especially since our landlord’s truck was nowhere to be seen (yes! No loud music or banging of hammers and other construction sounds!).

So we’re just about staring to unwind and getting into a nice romantic mood… when suddenly we hear this crash outside of our bedroom window. We just stop and sigh, thinking, crap… Martin’s home. Looks like we’ll be listening to banging for the rest of the night, since he’s still working on renovating the basement apartment.

So Tim and I get up and go to the window and look down to the lower level, expecting to see Martin and his dog Gunner out back. No Martin, though. It’s a bear. A freaking HUGE black bear had decided to visit our backyard, and knock over our landlord’s BBQ, and then proceeded to wrestle with the Propane tank! O__o

We were both staring at this bear like… uhm. Wow! You don’t see that every day! Our next door neighbor lady is always telling us to be careful of the bear, since he frequently visits her backyard as well, and she is screaming and throwing rocks and firewood at him on a regular basis. Of course this was the first time we ever got to see him in person.

After watching him for about ten seconds, Tim opens up our window and yells, “HEY!” The bear looks up at us for a moment, and stumbles backwards, almost like he was thinking, “Uh-oh… I’m busted!” Then he turned around and hightailed it back towards out neighbor’s fence. Then she came out and started yelling at him, and threw some rocks, and he ran back into the woods.

Our Backyard

A pic of our “backyard.”

Bear In The Tree

A photo Tim took of a bear we saw while on a drive with his parents, when they were here visiting. We saw a mom, and two of her cubs crossing the road, and stopped to watch them for a bit.

Our neighbor came by our place and asked us if we were okay (she’s a pretty nice neighbor lady, very chatty, and has a pottery studio in her backyard). We were more amused by the bear’s visit than really frightened by it. He didn’t seem malicious at all… just curious and looking for food. If it had been a Grizzly, I would have been a lot more worried, but Black bears will usually run away from you if you yell at them. I thought it was kind of neat, actually. After that, we visited with our neighbor for a bit, and helped her and her husband move their new piano into their living room, before heading back to our place to finish unwinding.

Today we’re going to go hike the Chief Mountain. We’re hoping to actually finish the first peak this time around, and Zena will be coming along to help me, since I don’t think I could get up that mountain without her pulling me most of the way. She LOVES climbing! She’s a regular little mountain goat. :-P I need to get her a proper harness for mountain-climbing, though.

You're lucky bears don't seize up their claws when they're startled. I can see the headlines now.

Bear and old lady injured in propane tank explosion. New candidate for Smokey the Bear advertisements up to run.
